RECIPES TO CELEBRATE
A TASTE OF INTERFAITH
Most religions have foods that are related to the festivals and holy days. The connection can be a religious one - because the food is prescribed through the sacred texts - or a cultural one - because this food has connections to the festival.
Either way, a specific meal in many ways is essential to really enjoy the celebration of a holy day.
On many occasions guests are invited to share that special meal. Sometimes, for guests who are not familiar with the traditions; the meal is a chance to share more than just the physical food. The sharing moves into the multicultural and spiritual aspects of a meal too.
We would like to make a special cook book. For that we need your help.
The book will contain recipes for specific foods: food that is strongly connected to certain celebratory days of as many religions as possible within our Christchurch Interfaith Society.
The book will consist of recipes as well as of photos of the dishes; it will be a practical book, ready to be used in the kitchen for an interfaith adventure at your table.
More importantly: the recipe should be accompanied by a short explanation as to why this specific food ha become connected to this specific day.
It is going to be an Interfaith Cook Book, after all.

In Judaism many foods are strongly connected with Holy Days. Jews like to “nash”; they are fond of eating the good stuff ! For Passover e.g. the unleavened bread - the Matzo - is a must. It is prescribed in Torah and every year at Pesach Jews all over the world eat this bread - and abstain from anything leavened for eight days - as a commemoration of the Exodus from Mizrajiem (Egypt) thousands of years ago. There was no time to let the dough rest to leaven, so the bread was quickly made to be able to leave as soon as possible.
With the Matzo other food items are eaten like an hard boiled egg, bitter herb, charoset (a mix of apple, raisings, nuts, honey and cinnamon), green herbs and a charred lambs bone is on the platter as a remembrance of the lamb that was killed and provided the blood to mark the doorposts and thus prevented the angel of Death to enter the Jewish homes. All this together is named the Seder Platter.
And then the recipe for the making of Matzo and Charoset will follow and a picture of a complete Seder Platter will be shown.
